Designed by Physiotherapist Tim Keeley, this structured 16-week rehabilitation program helps people managing Knee Osteoarthritis or recovering from Total Knee Replacement improve knee strength, mobility, balance and everyday function through progressive exercise and guided rehabilitation.

WHY KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS AND KNEE REPLACEMENT REHAB REQUIRE A PLAN

Managing Knee Osteoarthritis or recovering from Total Knee Replacement involves more than simply reducing pain. Improving muscle strength, restoring movement and gradually increasing functional activity are essential parts of building a stronger, more capable knee.

Without a structured exercise plan, many people are unsure which exercises to perform, how much resistance to use, when to progress or how to manage pain and swelling. This can contribute to ongoing difficulties such as:

  • Knee pain, stiffness and reduced range of movement
  • Quadriceps weakness and loss of muscle strength
  • Difficulty walking longer distances
  • Reduced confidence climbing and descending stairs
  • Poor balance and functional movement control
  • Difficulty returning to everyday and recreational activities

  • Knee Osteoarthritis & Total Knee Replacement Rehab

This program provides a progressive rehabilitation pathway with detailed exercise videos, mobility and strengthening sessions, functional exercises, stage goals and guidance to help you improve strength, movement and confidence at your own pace.

    WHY THIS PROGRAM WAS CREATED

    Why this program was created

As a Physiotherapist working with patients recovering from knee surgery and managing chronic knee conditions, Tim Keeley understands the importance of progressive strengthening and functional rehabilitation.

One of the most common challenges for people with Knee Osteoarthritis or following Total Knee Replacement is knowing how to progress beyond basic mobility exercises and build the strength needed for walking, stairs and everyday activities.

The goal is not simply to complete 16 weeks of exercises, but to help people develop the strength, confidence and exercise habits required to remain active over the long term.

This program was developed using the same rehabilitation principles applied in clinical practice, providing a structured pathway from early mobility and muscle activation through to progressive resistance training, balance, functional strength and long-term knee maintenance.

    PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

    PROGRAM PRE-REQUISITES

Before commencing this rehabilitation program, you must meet the following criteria to ensure safety and suitability:

    1. Knee Osteoarthritis or Total Knee Replacement

You should have a diagnosis of Knee Osteoarthritis and/or be recovering from Total Knee Replacement surgery.

    2. Medical clearance to commence rehabilitation
You should have clearance from your Surgeon, Physiotherapist or treating healthcare professional to commence an appropriate exercise rehabilitation program.

    3. Suitable stage of recovery
Patients recovering from Total Knee Replacement should also follow their individual post-operative rehabilitation instructions. Progression depends on wound healing, pain, swelling, movement, weight-bearing ability and any specific surgical precautions.

People managing Knee Osteoarthritis may begin at a suitable level according to their symptoms, mobility and physical capacity.

    4. No significant post-operative complications
Following surgery, you should not have signs of infection, wound complications, suspected blood clots or other serious post-operative concerns. Seek prompt medical assessment if these occur.

    5. Safe to begin exercise and weight bearing
You should be able to perform the prescribed movements safely, using walking aids or additional support where required.

    6. Follow individual rehabilitation restrictions
Continue following any specific precautions, mobility restrictions or weight-bearing instructions provided by your Surgeon or Physiotherapist.
